1) How easy is it to hire a van?
Quite often you will need to travel to get the van, provide numerous forms of ID, a security deposit and your driving licence. You may have to be of a certain age to hire the vehicle and have the required classes on your driver’s licence.
2) Re-fueling your hired van
Remember when hiring a van you will need to leave the same amount of fuel in it as when you collected it, some companies leave it empty some insist it is returned full
3) What is the actual cost for hiring a van?
Most companies will hire on a day rate, nearly all will impose a mileage restriction on its use. For example £50 hire for the day with 100 miles included anything over that is charged extra. The mileage starts from when you leave their yard and stops once it is parked back in their yard.
4) Time taken to complete your deliveries
How long will it take you from start to finish to collect the van, do your collection and delivery and return the van. Just think if you were working what your hourly rate is in your day job.
5) Equipment
Do you have the necessary equipment to cover your item and secure it in the van?, ie blankets and ties
6) Total cost
Add up your costs.

- diesel cost
- excess mileage charge
- Re-fuelling cost
- Equipment hire
- £20 “drink” you give to your mate helping
